For Undocumented Immigrants: Slavery for a U.S. Paycheck Nowy Dziennik
/ Polish Daily News
These stories and others won top recognition at the Ippiesthe Independent Press Association-New Yorks awards for editorial and graphics excellence in the ethnic and community press. The Ippies were announced at the IPA-New Yorks 3rd annual member conference and awards dinner on Wednesday, December 15, 2004. A complete list of recipients is available from the IPA-New York and will be published on the organizations website at http://www.indypressny.org.
The rich diversity of NYs ethnic and community press was recognized Wednesday night. Awards went to Haitian, Chinese, Indian, Arab, and Jewish publications, as well as those media outlets focused on the LGBT community, women, and New York-area neighborhoods. Nowy Dziennik / Polish Daily News was recognized for For Undocumented Immigrants: Slavery for a U.S. Paycheck, a piece on the struggle of low-wage immigrant low-wage laborers to survive financially in the U.S.
The dinner followed a day of valuable trainings for the publishers, editors, journalists and ad salespeople in the ethnic and community press to help them survive and succeed in the competitive NY publishing industry. Among the highlights of the conference was a lunch presentation by Geneva Overholser of the Washington Bureau of the Missouri School of Journalism. She is a broadcast and media critic, syndicated columnist, and previously was an editor for seven years at the award-winning Des Moines Register.
Many of the winning articles dealt with issues of exploitation of undocumented immigrants in the workplace, low-income tenants by landlords, and other issues in the day-to-day life of individuals struggling against disempowerment. Publications in the independent press often report on the injustices suffered by their readership and ways in which the communities are responding. Links to full stories will be available soon at the IPA-New Yorks website www.indypressny.org.
IPA-New York is a member-based nonprofit organization of ethnic and community media. IPA-NY operates All Communities Ad Service (AllCAS), an ad placement service for ethnic publications, produces Voices That Must Be Heard, a weekly Internet publication translating the best of NYs ethnic press for wide distribution and publishes Many Voices, One City: a comprehensive guide to NY-area publications serving 60 ethnic groups in 42 languages.
