The Democratic Party promises amnesty

The Democratic National Convention passed the Party Platform on its second day, which included a resolution promising amnesty to all hard-working and tax-paying undocumented immigrants that will appeal to the large immigrant population.

The resolution declares that the United States is built by immigrants and states that the Democratic Party will dedicate itself to supporting immigration law reform. All undocumented immigrants should have a chance to fully participate in the American dream as long as they pass a security check, work hard, and pay taxes.

The Democratic Party will seek to speed up the process to allow family reunification and provide better English and citizenship programs. The delegates also vowed to have Washington D.C. work closely with Canada and Mexico to gather information on all people who cross the borders for improved security.

John Kerry, the Democratic Party candidate-elect, promised to propose an immigration bill within one hundred days of taking office. He said that the bill will strengthen border security and promised to legalize undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for five years, pass a security check, work hard and pay taxes.

He also supports the DREAM Act that would grant green cards to undocumented college students who graduated from an U.S. high school. Kerry also promised to increase security in the issuing of driver’s licenses throughout the country and to reduce the backlog of immigration applications.

As expected, the reaction to this news has many immigrants happy. Shen Zheng Zhang, an immigration lawyer, said that if the Democratic Party wins back the White House, there is a very good possibility that the proposed bill for increasing the number of H2C visas, which allows workers who wish to labor in the United States for only a few years and then return home, would pass. Zhang said that the bill sets clear rules regarding the issuing visas to non-professional laborers such as chefs, nannies, domestic workers, construction workers and farmers. The bill stipulates the creation of 100,000 new H2C visas that would help many undocumented immigrants already in the country, Zhang said.
