Efforts are being made to track politicians, businessmen, bureaucrats, terrorists and strongmen who received money through corruption in Bangladesh and bought houses or business institutions in different U.S. states, including New York, New Jersey, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, Florida, Pennsylvania, California, Michigan, Illinois and Nevada. Bangladeshi expatriates living in New York also have taken on this initiative, it was learned on February 11.
Because relatives of the corrupt nationals live in the United States, the work is being conducted secretly. Sources close to the initiative indicate that more than 100 Bangladeshi bureaucrats, politicians and businessmen, have homes and businesses in New York. As well, over 500 children, sons and daughters of these corrupt Bangladeshis, are studying at different educational institutions throughout the state.
According to a source at least 42 former government ministers own more than one house in the United States. Persons associated with the BNP, Awami League and Bangladeshi Jatiya Party branch in the United States are also involved in tracking the Bangladeshis involved in this corruption.
Bangladeshi expatriates interested in contesting elections in Bangladesh are pleased in the initiative and believe it will be successful. According to information, in the last 15 years at least 200 members of parliament, ministers and bureaucrats have invested money in different sectors of America.
It may be mentioned that the military backed caretaker government in Bangladesh, which took power on January 11, 2006, announced a list of corrupt politicians and arrested many of them in a bid to purge corrupt elements from society.
