NY day laborers dream of working the land in Mexico

Mexican immigrant workers in New York continue to have hope that there will be greater development of the agricultural sector in Mexico, and greater support for the poor rural areas there.

Despite the years that have passed, Wenceslao Mantilla, 43, says that he would like to return to his native Atlixco, Puebla, to work his land, which he acquired while in the United States.

Mantilla added that his love for the land has lasted for generations. “We grew up working the land for ourselves before coming here. The only thing we did was sow. I would love to return to keep harvesting,” he commented.

Alberto Méndez, also originally from Atlixco, says that he maintains hope in the Mexican farmland. “I believe that the authorities should help the countryside more. They have always forgotten it. In Mexico we have everything. It is a country with a lot of riches, and it’s a shame that we have to leave because we don’t have support.”

Méndez, whose parents are farmers, said that he would like to buy machinery for his land, which he also bought with the fruits of his labor in New York.

“In the time I have been living here, some eight years, I have been able to do something with myself for my family. Now we are buying a truck for my dad, all thanks to washing dishes in a restaurant,” said Méndez.

Both immigrants said that they continue to feel love for the countryside, despite the fact that it has not received support in recent years.

“They say that there is [support], but among those of use who came from the country, we know that it’s not true, or maybe it is for some, but not for most of us poor people, who are many,” lamented Méndez.
