NY Bangladeshi Americans organize for Obama

As the race between the two Democratic presidential candidates intensifies, support for Barack Obama among Bangladeshi Americans is increasing. In response, on February 18, a new organization, Bangladeshi-Americans for Obama, was formed. The New York-based organization said it already contacted Barack Obama’s campaign office and will launch a comprehensive campaign in Bangladeshi communities around the country.

The steering committee for the organization, with 51 members and two co-directors, Abdul Latif Samrat and Firoj Alam, urged all members of the Bangladeshi community to work selflessly for Obama. They mentioned that the sincerity that Obama is showing for the immigrant communities is absent in Hillary. They also said that Obama’s positions on the Iraq war, health care and the economy are clear.

Samrat opines that the wave of inspiration that Barack Obama has instilled among the voters during the primaries will carry him to the general elections. Other representatives for the organization stated that only Obama, as president, could build up the image of the United States here and abroad and secure the rights of immigrants.
