Looking towards 2009: the changes in Flushing politics

The defeat of Ellen Young – the first Chinese-American assemblywoman in New York State two years ago – and the win of Grace Meng perhaps signaled a change in Councilman John Liu’s domination of Flushing politics. The battle between Young and Meng started in the 2004 primary, when Jimmy Meng, Grace’s father, was elected to the State Assembly. Things had changed drastically as the Meng family regained its power. Moreover, Liu’s term will come to an end next year. Many wonder how the politics of Flushing will be reorganized.

Two years ago, Grace Meng was in a tight race with Ellen Young. Meng had done very well and it looked like she had a good chance to win. However, after submitting her registration – she withdrew from the race voluntarily – her residency requirement became very suspicious. Meng had not left the community. Instead, she formed her own community center and served as the chair of the Queens Chinese women’s association. She had been active in large and small functions, making her political ambition quite obvious.

Community members believed that even though Meng seemed humble, she was ambitious and would not give up easily. She was poised to take over John Liu’s position; however, many did not expect Meng to make a quick comeback and to compete for the Assembly position since she had just given birth. The election of Grace Meng showed the powerful influence and support of her father, Jimmy Meng. In Flushing politics, the Mengs often stood in opposition to the influence of John Liu. Because Liu had much resources and power in the party, the Mengs had not been very active. Two years ago, due to health reasons, Jimmy Meng stepped down. It was obvious that the Meng family’s influence in Flushing politics was a problem for Liu’s spread of power there.

Four years ago, Allen Gersham, who was backed by John Liu, was defeated by Jimmy Meng. Grace Meng’s latest win shows a change of Flushing politics. As Liu’s term expires next year, he will look forward to a citywide position. His road will not be easy. Although Liu’s political empire will not crumble easily, the recent changes indicate that he is no longer in full control. Grace Meng undoubtedly wants to become a City Councilwoman in 2009.
