It’s been a little over a week since Barack Obama was elected to be America’s next president, and reports are already surfacing about some who responded to the news negatively. In the last 10 days, incidents have been popping up involving those who are angered about the idea about a Black man running their country.
In Staten Island, reports indicate that on election night, a carload of white men beat a Black Muslim teenager. Ali Kamara, 17, told police that his attackers shouted Obama prior to beating him with a baseball bat. Walking a block away from his home when the attack occurred, Kamara suffered wounds to the head that required staples.
Black residents in Staten Island are reporting that they have been victims of harassment and racial slurs in the borough. Police have not made any arrests, but it has been announced that the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of New York are helping in the investigation.
At a celebration at a barbershop in Stapleton, some people leaving the shop on election night heard racial slurs shouted at them as they were going home. Another report of a float driving around on Election Day, urging people to vote for Obama, was confronted with racial slurs as it drove through the streets.
Staten Island NAACP President Edward Josey said that he’s doing his part to combat the problem. He has sent letters to the district attorney, Borough President James Molinaro and the NYPD.
“It’s unfortunate because this a moment to rejoice, not feel intimidated,” said Josey. “When Bush was elected, people were annoyed about it, but they didn’t go around making remarks toward other people. He was the President of the United States, but people accepted it.”
Problems are getting so bad that the Staten Island African American Political Association is holding a meeting Thursday night to address the issue. The meeting will discuss ways to keep peace in the community after the election of Obama. Staten Island was the only borough where the majority of voters did not vote for President-elect Obama.
Josey said, “This is a moment America should be proud. Black folks voted for [Obama], but if it had not been for white voters, he would not be in office. I would hope at some point America would get over this. America will probably be better having Obama as president.”
In Oswego, NY, reports indicate that a fight outside of a pizza parlor last weekend might have been sparked by remarks about the President-elect. The incident left a college student in the hospital and a U.S Army soldier in jail.
Pvt. Kevin Flanagan, of Fort Drum, got into an argument about remarks made about Obama with SUNY Oswego student Angel Mareno, of the Bronx, outside of the pizza shop. Flanagan hit Mareno, giving him a severe head injury. He was sent to jail and held on $10,000 bond.
In a non-Obama related incident in Long Island, seven teens have been charged in the killing of a Hispanic man in Patchogue. Police say that one of the suspects, a 17 year old, stabbed the man in the chest with a knife.
Reports indicate that the teens attacked Marcello Lucero, 37, because he was Hispanic. Six of the teens have been charged with the assault as a hate crime and one with charged with manslaughter as a hate crime.
The teens are being held in jail without bond. Hispanics across America, a Latino advocacy group, may file civil suit against the teens’ parents.
