Economic stimulus plan will not help all immigrants

Few Mexicans believe that the economic stimulus plan signed this week by President Obama will be of much help to immigrants, since they do not have what they need to access the support.

Fabricio Gonzalez said that as a construction worker he does not think that he can benefit from the economic stimulus plan because he does not have a Social Security number. The native of Aguascalientes, Mexico says that he does not want to be an economic burden for the country.

“They pay me in cash because we do not have social security cards, and it is better that way. I don’t want to be a burden for the government. As long as there is more work, I will have gotten what I need,” said Gonzalez, who does not know if a person with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) can access the economic stimulus being offered to the country’s taxpayers.

Gonzalez’s doubt is one that many people in his situation have, and it will be clarified only when the details of President Obama’s economic stimulus plan are revealed.

As of now, the economic stimulus law is being analyzed by experts and as the days goes by, the benefits that each state will receive, including New York, will be revealed.

For now, Mexican families say that they will benefit through their children born in this country, who meet the requirements to receive the economic stimulus.

“My two children, one is 18 and the other is 19, work and they are going to file their taxes, and that will help all of us. We are a small family, but we came here 22 years ago and we are still in the same situation. Now they can benefit because they are from this country,” said Vanesa Licone, 53, from Cholula, Puebla.
