In an effort to get younger Blacks involved in politics and give a platform to Black
politicians, Norman Graham turned to the Internet to get his message out.
Graham, 34, is founder, chairman and CEO of On the Spot Productions, Inc. Internet and political junkies can find him at www.onthespotpro.com, which features weekly videos of politicians discussing community and city issues, with Graham serving as the host.
Based in Brooklyn, Graham was born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He said that while Bed-Stuy is starting to look different, he welcomes some of the changes.
"The new diversity in Bed-Stuy that we have is changing for the better," he said. "Bed-Stuy is on the rise."
Prior to owning his own media company, Graham was a correctional officer. He also has his own licensed security company. Graham said he was inspired to have his own political program by James Mtume and the KISS-FM show "Open Line."
"I liked what I heard on 'Open Line' and decided I wanted to do the same thing, but do it for TV," he said. "There really aren't a lot of outlets for Black people to talk politics on TV."
With no experience in TV editing and production, Graham taught himself how to make his own Internet video show. He invested $100,000 to turn his office into a studio with the equipment needed to create video segments. On the Spot Productions launched online in 2006.
Since the website's launch, Graham has hosted several segments featuring the city's Black politicians and community heavy hitters. Guests on the show have included Councilman Charles Barron, Councilman Al Vann and the Rev. Conrad Tillard.
Graham is currently hosting a series of segments featuring candidates during the city elections, ranging from City Council to mayor. He hopes to get more Blacks involved in the political process.
"I'm trying to enlighten the younger community and make politics cool for my generation," he said. "You don't have to have a suit and tie on to have a political conversation."
On the Spot Productions plans to have other shows on its website, including a financial literacy show hosted by Ryan Mack, who has been featured on CNN.
Graham said, "I want to put a major hole in New York City politics as well as national politics, and I want On the Spot Productions to be like a CNN for the Black community on the web."
