Apply to work with the Census 2010

A representative of a local Census 2010 bureau approached our newspaper to appeal to Poles to apply for jobs connected with the population count.

Census 2010 is accepting applications for managerial positions at local bureaus that will be open in August 2009. In New York and part of New Jersey there are 160 of such jobs available.

Currently they are recruiting for managerial positions such as: Local Census Office Manager, Assistant Manager for Field Operations, Assistant Manager for Administration, Assistant Manager for Recruiting, Assistant Manager for Quality Assurance, and Assistant Manager for Technology. These positions are open for citizens and green card holders who have some experience as managers and supervisors (details regarding requirements and qualifications for the particular positions can be found at http://www.census.gov/ronyc/www/LCO-Jobs.html).

This is full-time though temporary employment that will last from August this year for at least 12 months.

In order to be considered for a position an individual has to take a test. Exams for managerial positions take approximately an hour and will be held till June 12th on various days of the week, including Saturdays. To schedule an appointment to take the Census Management test one has to register at (866) 861-2010. Calling the number an applicant has to provide his or her zip code and will be connected with a corresponding local bureau. Each Census office has a couple of zip codes assigned. Depending on where one lives, he or she will be sent there to take the test and later be appointed to a position, providing they pass the test. This is a national number, which can be dialed not only by people living in New York or New Jersey, but from all over the country.

To take the test an individual has to have a fair knowledge of English. "The exams are not too difficult but not easy at the same time," recruiters assure. "If you have attended a language school here or even earned a degree you should have no problem," they say. Unfortunately, Nowy Dziennik was unable to obtain test samples with sample questions.

The census is a count of everyone living in the United States done every 10 years. It is mandated by the U.S. Constitution and takes no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.
