CNN is trumpeting its special on Hispanics, "Latino in America." But this Latino-friendly, four-hour program does not begin to balance-out CNN's nightly, Hispanic-unfriendly fare.
CNN provides 260 primetime hours for Lou Dobbs Tonight—anti-Hispanic fear-mongering and immigrant-bashing disguised as a "news" program. Dobbs has used CNN air time to float many lies about immigrants. He falsely reported that immigrants were triggering a rise in leprosy in the United States. And he repeated that lie despite clear evidence of its falsehood.
Dobbs regularly questions the patriotism and legitimacy of Latinos and Hispanic institutions. The CNN pundit said the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was in cahoots with drug cartels to bring down America— the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce! Nativist and racist groups claim Dobbs as their ally and he invites their representatives to pose as "experts" on his show.
In an effort to shed light on Dobbs' agenda, America's Voice and Media Matters attempted to buy time to raise awareness about a campaign against his hateful rhetoric. CNN rejected the ad, but it has not rejected Dobbs.
The massive, national campaign is calling on CNN to drop Dobbs. Presente.org, one of the leading organizations, is today expected to report on mobilization efforts, including a growing list of petitioners signing on to the campaign, which has spread across 20 U.S. cities to Latin America where CNN en Español omits the Dobbs show.
Dobbs has tried to downplay this campaign. But word is that CNN executives are paying attention. Beyond the national organizations that typically advocate for Latinos and media accuracy, everyday folks are voicing their distaste for Dobbs' flimsy, false and hostile commentaries—which fly in the face of a network trying to claim credibility.
Latinos in America have had enough of Dobbs' lies and slander. Choose, CNN: Who do you stand for? Is it Latinos in America or Lou Dobbs?
