State reps endorse Margaret Chin for City Council

City Council candidate Margaret Chin received endorsements last Wednesday (October 21) from State Senator Daniel Squadron (D-District 25), State Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh (D-District 74), and the 201 Stanton Street Tenants' Association, expressing support for her bid to represent Manhattan's 1st Council District in the November 3 election. If elected, Chin would become the Lower East Side's first Asian Councilwoman.

Rosie Mendez, of the neighboring 2nd Council District, also conveyed her support for Chin, saying she hopes to be able to work hand-in-hand with Chin to build community in the Lower East Side.

The 1st Council District, which includes Chinatown, the Lower East Side, Tribeca, Wall Street, and Battery Park, overlaps with Squadron's 25th Senate District and Kavanagh's 74th Assembly District. Both representatives said they look forward to cooperating with Chin if she is elected.

Squadron said that Chin has been an active promoter of the Lower Manhattan community for years, and has made many contributions to the welfare of its citizens, particularly in the areas of housing and education. He expressed hopes that he and Chin will be able to work together to serve the community.

Kavanagh said that Chin is a model immigrant, and he hopes that if elected, she will take further steps to advance the welfare of immigrants.

It was with Chin's help that the apartment building at 201 Stanton Street, which is subsidized under Section 8, managed to extend its rent-controlled status years ago. Thus, its tenants' association has enthusiastically endorsed Chin.
