Neighborhoods in New York continue to generate jobs for their residents. Some, like Williamsburg, Brooklyn, have work available year round for Mexicans living in this part of the Big Apple.

Brooklyn, one of the most populous boroughs in the city, has a long tradition of creating jobs for local residents. Neighborhoods like Williamsburg not only offer innumerable cafes, restaurants and clothing shops, but also art galleries and recreation zones for visitors from around the country, as well as the borough's own residents.

Nobody loses

Mexican workers say they have found Williamsburg to provide a constant stream of employment opportunities that allow them to live close to their neighborhoods, while simultaneously stimulating and supporting the local economy.

Some say that jobs in other areas pay better, but that living close to home is worth it. "You lose less time and earn about the same salary or higher, because you don't spend money on food or waste time traveling," said Sergio Osorio, originally from the city of Tlaxcala. He has been living in Williamsburg for seven years.

Osorio said he prefers to work for a local company rather than travel on a daily basis to Manhattan or somewhere else. "Before, I was working on Lexington Avenue and 86th Street. Now I walk a block from my home, I have fewer expenses and it's better for my family because I'm nearby," said Osorio, who is married and has a 3-year-old daughter.

A good investment

People who invest in the neighborhood, such as Orson Salicetti, who recently opened a liquor store called Caracas that specializes in rum from Latin America and the Caribbean, say the good thing about places like Williamsburg is that residents also invest in the area.

"The people are very loyal to local businesses, creating success and a good economy for everyone. Customers support us and in return, we give them excellent service," Salicetti said.
