According to a study by the University of Wisconsin, the news that the Bronx is one of the least healthy boroughs is a tangible reality for Mexican immigrant families that live there who say they don't exercise regularly and have a sedentary lifestyle.
Hernán Luna, 38, admits that he is overweight because he doesn't exercise. This family man, who is solely dedicated to his work in order to provide for his wife and four children, maintains that he simply doesn't have time to exercise.
Luna isn't just worried about his weight, but also about his youngest son, 5, who also suffers from obesity, in part because they can't go outside to play during the wintertime, says Luna.
"My son is fat. I pick him up and he's very heavy," says this father, concerned by the weight his child has gained over the winter months.
Luna is certainly aware that he hasn't given his son a healthier and active lifestyle, but he says that in the South Bronx, where the family lives, there aren't any indoor recreation centers where children can play sports. He doesn't have a specific plan to help his family become more active.
Just work
In another area of this borough, Virgilio Villegas, 23, says that his daily routine consists of going to work and coming home, but that routine doesn't include exercise, which is why he is overweight.
"I don't have the habit; I've never exercised, that's how every day is," said Villegas, who has started to worry about his appearance and bulging stomach.
"When I arrived in this country, I was a stick; now I have a potbelly," he said, laughing about his appearance.
