Mexican immigrants on alert

Given the recent wave of attacks against Mexican immigrants over the last three weeks on Staten Island, Mexican authorities have begun to distribute telephone cards with emergency hotlines.

Abuses toward the Mexican immigrant community in this part of the city caught the attention of Mexican authorities in the tri-state area; they advised people to be on alert.

As a preventive measure, the Mexican Consulate in Manhattan and representatives that travel to different parts of the tri-state area began to hand out the cards with emergency hotlines.

Mexican authorities told Diario de Mexico USA that given the recent incidents on Staten Island, they have also started a media campaign together with organizations that support human rights and immigrant rights. The campaign urges people in the community to report hate crimes, whether they are the victims or witnesses of the incident, no matter what their legal status.

Condemning attacks

"The Mexican Consulate in New York deeply laments and harshly condemns these cowardly acts against the immigrant community, which demonstrate intolerance and ignorance," said Rubén Beltrán, the consul general of Mexico in New York.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Unit recently began an investigation into the latest attacks against Mexican workers, which have occurred on April 5th, April 10th, and April 25th.

The Mexican Consulate in New York thought the NYPD's action was appropriate, given the deep concern throughout the Mexican community in Staten Island.
