In response to the DREAM Act was not being passed in the Senate on the 21st, the New York Immigration Coalition and the Min Kwon Center for Community Action held a rally in Manhattan to urge the passing of the DREAM Act. The supporters of the DREAM Act also hope that President Obama signs an executive order to stop undocumented immigrants from being deported and open a path for them to gain legal status.
Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, expressed her anger at the Republican Party that voted 100 percent against the DREAM Act and considered that their votes went against morality and justice. She emphasized the importance of the DREAM Act for children and their families.
"A vote against it is a vote against children," Hong said.
The New York Immigration Coalition is supporting the DREAM Act and a comprehensive immigration reform. According to Hong, these are necessary to allow more immigrants to become legalized and to build a better future.
S.J. Jung, on the board of directors of the Min Kwon Center for Community Action, said that their efforts would end with the Senate rejection of the DREAM Act. He pointed out that every year nearly 400,000 undocumented immigrants are deported. He hopes that Obama will sign an executive order to put an injunction on it. The Center will continue to participate in activities to pressure lawmakers and Obama.
David Nam, a student at New York University Stern School of Business, showed his support for the DREAM Act. According to Nam, every child deserves an opportunity to education. Moreover, many children of undocumented immigrants are already attending school in the United States, just like everyone else. They have the right to pursue the American Dream and a better future.
