More and more, Mexican workers without papers that would allow them to acquire identification documents issued by New York State are using their Mexican passports or driver's licenses to find employment.
"It's the only form of identification I have and I need it because [employers] are increasingly asking for some type of I.D.," said Ricardo, a reader that contacted Diario de Mexico USA to obtain the phone number for the Mexican Consulate General.
Ricardo expressed that until a short time ago he had no need to apply for documents that proved his Mexican citizenship. Over the last few months, however, he has noticed that potential employers demand to see official identification.
"I'm not sure why, but they've already asked me for I.D. various times. Having a passport and a driver's license helps a lot," Ricardo added.
Mexican immigrants recommend going to the Mexican Consulate in New York and not resorting to the famous identifications cards that can be bought in Chinatown.
