Youth protest in front of NY Mexican Consulate to demand an end to violence

Mexican nationals demanded that Mexican authorities put a stop to the wave of crimes through which they are living.  More than a dozen Mexican youths protested in front of the Mexican Consulate in New York to demand an end to the violence in Mexico caused by the drug cartels.

"We are tired of the wave of violence that assails the country.  We do not want any more innocent people to become victims of that war between the drug traffickers and the government.  Enough!" exclaimed one of the protesters, who participated in the march organized by Mexican poet and journalist Javier Sicilia.

Against the government

Immigrants of different ages held signs scrawled in bright red ink that read: "Not one more," while others called out loudly that Mexican President Felipe Calderón step down if he was unable to deal with the struggle against the war on drug trafficking.

"If you can't, leave; 40,000 are too many," read one of the signs.

The march was a replica of ones held in Mexico and around the world to show the indignation felt about the murder of Juan Francisco Sicilia, son of the poet and journalist Javier Sicilia, and four of his close friends, in the central state of Morelos.  The protesters demanded an investigation of the murders that took place on March 28 and an end to impunity.  The protestors handed consular officials a letter stating theirs demands.
