Broadcaster and journalist Lauren Booth, who is also a sister-in-law of former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has brushed aside the impression of a crusade against Islam and clarified that it is in fact, a war between capitalism and Islam.
Lauren Booth visited New York at the invitation of Islamic Circle of North America, an organization of the American Muslim community. During an interview with Pakistan Post, she said capitalism had no social ethics as it promotes business monopolies. On the contrary, she added, Islam promoted a more egalitarian society by advocating for a more equitable distribution of wealth.
According to Booth, there has been a lot of negative stereotyping of Muslims, which has tarnished their image, and found this propaganda to be completely baseless after she got closer to the Muslim community, working with the community in Britain and overseas. She believes much of the anti-Muslim propaganda to be politically motivated.
Commenting on a fraction of Muslim population in Britain, which includes some British Pakistanis as well, she opined it was drifting towards extremism largely due to a lack of opportunity to succeed in life. Many British Muslims are in economic straits, she pointed out, and do not do well academically. As a result, they are low on the economic ladder and fall prey to extremism.
She stressed the need for more dialogue between Christians, Jews and Muslims to build new bridges of understanding among the followers of the three Abrahamic religions.
Booth appeared at the Islam Channel's Global Peace and Unity event on October 23, 2010, dressed in loose clothing and with a hijab, declaring: "My name is Lauren Booth, and I am a Muslim." She explained that she converted to Islam in mid-September 2010 after her visit to the Iranian city of Qom.
