Polish Consulate to check conditions at NJ immigration detention center

After the recent detention of Polish student Paula Bakowska, who complained about bad treatment at the Elizabeth immigration detention center where she was taken from Newark Airport, the Polish consulate in New York has decided to inspect the center to see if its conditions meet the required norms.

Paula Bakowska's case, as well as that of Nadia Paszkowska, another Polish student, has been covered by the media in Poland. Bakowska told one of the news portals that immigration officers denied her admission to the United States on June 25, 2011, and accused her of trying to enter the country with the intention to work illegally.

Meanwhile, the Polish Consulate in New York, which was in touch with the student when she was detained at the airport in Newark, says that Bakowska confessed to immigration officials that she had worked for a family she stayed with the previous summer. The immigration officer interpreted it as illegal employment and denied her entry to the United States.

Although the story Bakowska presented to the consulate contained some inaccuracies, her complaints about the bad treatment while at the Elizabeth detention center prompted the consulate to inspect the facility, says Consul Agnieszka Kumas. A similar inspection was conducted there by the consulate two years ago, at which time the diplomats found no irregularities or violations.

Bakowska's case is the first since October of last year, when a Polish citizen complained to the Polish Consulate about bad treatment received from immigration authorities.
