Study: Religion shapes health care views among U.S. Muslims

American Muslims hailing from India and Pakistan believe God influences recovery from illness to a great extent, according to a study by researchers at the University of Chicago. In a first of its kind study, researchers found that among Muslims from South Asia, the Arab states and African-Americans, the perceived role of God in illness and recovery is a primary influence upon the health care beliefs and behavior. It recommends outreach and education efforts by the health care community to help address Muslim concerns and improve health care quality in this rapidly growing population. The traditional Ramadan fasting this month is but one of many facets of the Islamic faith that might influence a patient's health behavior.
