America will not be a land of our dreams unless we make it one

Watching my kid play a video game, where the player had a big hammer and his work was to crush the heads of snakes that were emanating from everywhere, reminded me of President Bush playing at perpetual war. His hammer is his foreign and domestic policy and the snakes are we Muslims. After Afghanistan and Iraq, an American led war in Syria and Iran is not fantasy.

Domestically in the United States the Patriot Act threatens the civil liberties of every American, but if you are Muslim you have much more to fear.

From what I know of Nazi Germany, the culture changed to fascism gradually, and the cultural change was brought about by a few people at the top.

I believe that the Muslim community in the U.S. needs to read the writing on the wall and organize itself and give an answer to Bush and the Republicans in the 2004 elections. It may be the most fateful elections Muslims in the U.S. have ever encountered.

President Bush still has formidable approval ratings, even though the economy is not doing well and he has all his fingers in the pie of the Middle East. Many Muslims feel that no matter who comes to power in the U.S. they will be anti-Muslim. But I believe it is now time for fresh thinking.

More Muslims than ever of those who can apply for citizenship are doing so. So are larger numbers than before registering to vote. Unfortunately I feel that not enough middle class and middle aged Muslim women, who are citizens, are aware of how politically crucial the times are. We need to enlarge our circle of concerns, for the sake of our future in this country and in the world.
