Central Queens has more than 416 Korean businesses

For the 100th anniversary celebration of Korean-American immigration, the Korean Association of Central Queens, supported by the Korean Daily News, has completed a three month survey of Korean businesses in the area.

Of the 416 Korean businesses, 50 percent were cleaners’ and tailors’ businesses, 12 percent were groceries. Nail salons and beauty shops, restaurants, cell-phone stores and photo shops make up the rest.

Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Corona have over 200 businesses. These are the largest Korean population areas in New York. The Sunnyside and Woodside areas have 128 Korean businesses. This area is served by the Number 7 line; it has many commuters to Manhattan, as well as many foreign students.

The Forest Hills area has 25 businesses.

“This is the first time such a survey has ever been conducted, Our survey missed some businesses—we couldn’t locate them all. But we will, in a second survey, the final results of which will be used to create a business directory,” said Kuen-o Kim of the Korean Association of Queens. “The survey will also be used to demonstrate and increase both Korean political power, the activities of Koreans in American society, and the activities of the Korean Association,” said Kim.
