Teachers continue to teach without getting paid

Two months after the school year began, many New York teachers have not regularly received their salaries because the City Department of Education has not integrated them into the payroll system.

Some of the teachers have resigned out of frustration. They and other teachers received emergency checks in order to survive while the Department of Education integrates them into its payroll database. But many said that the payments had been sporadic; in fact it made it impossible for them to plan their finances during the last two months.

In addition to not receiving a regular paycheck, the teachers have been without medical insurance and have had to pay for health services out of their own pockets while their information is processed by the Department of Education. Because their emergency checks contain higher amounts than normal they have been subjected to higher tax. Most of the teachers in limbo are new or have been away from the system for a while and are completing reinstatement.

The United Federation of Teachers is said to have received complaints from at least 100 teachers that still are not receiving regular payment.
