Uruguayan community condemns police violence

Members of the Uruguayan community in Queens gathered with elected officials and activists on July 27 to denounce police conduct that took place on Sunday, July 24, when New York Police Department (NYPD) officers allegedly assaulted a group of people in Jackson Heights who were celebrating the Uruguayan soccer team's record 15th Copa America victory.

Neighborhoods on the verge of losing daycare centers

For Miguel Reinoso, a 53-year-old Hispanic man who attended the demonstration, saving daycare centers isn't a political issue. Reinoso is raising his three grandchildren, ages 4, 6, and 9, in Bushwick, Brooklyn. He is afraid that if he can't secure a spot for the youngest one, Essence, that he will lose his job at a bodega, and then his apartment. more>

The Census Bureau data released yesterday show that 43.6 million people in the United States were living in poverty in 2009. For Latinos in particular, one in four Latinos is poor.

Bills against hunger in New York

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is pushing for four bills that seek to alleviate hunger. There is bipartisan support in Washington to increase federal funding for emergency food programs and to make donations of leftover food from restaurants and factories tax deductible. more>

Attempt to reunite military families

National Immigration Forum Executive Director Ali Noorani stated that there could be thousands of military families who have an undocumented member – it is estimated that there are more than 114,000 immigrants in the Armed Forces.

Layoffs of Latino school assistants

According to Judge Carol Edmead, who ruled in favor of 530 school assistants who are on a list to be laid off from city public schools, "These planned layoffs disproportionately affect the poorest districts, and jeopardize the opportunity of equal education for students in the affected schools." more>

Constant harassment of Latinos in Suffolk County

 Javier Monroy, of Mexico origin, received nine stitches and has a $30,000 debt from the five days he spent in the hospital.  He recalled the incident yesterday, "They yelled at me.  They left me bleeding in the street," he said.
